What is K9 crystal and how is it different from regular glass?

K9 is a borosilicate optical crystal — the same grade used in camera lenses, binoculars, and precision optical instruments. It has a higher refractive index than standard soda-lime glass (approximately 1.52 vs 1.5), meaning it bends and disperses light more efficiently. This higher refraction is what produces the prismatic rainbow dispersion characteristic of quality crystal chandeliers — the splitting of white light into its spectrum colours across walls and ceilings. K9 is also harder, more UV-stable, and clearer than acrylic crystal substitutes. The difference between K9 and cheaper alternatives is visible in person: K9 produces true prismatic colour; substitutes produce dull glimmer. Our full Crystal Collection uses K9 throughout.

How do I clean a crystal chandelier?

Turn off the fixture and allow it to cool completely before cleaning. For light dust: use a clean, dry microfibre cloth or compressed air to remove dust from each crystal. For deeper cleaning: use a 1:3 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water in a spray bottle, spray onto a microfibre cloth (not directly onto the fixture), and wipe each crystal individually. Never use ammonia-based cleaners or harsh chemicals — these will strip any coating on the frame and may cloud the crystal over time. Allow to dry completely before switching back on. For large installations, cleaning cotton gloves worn during handling prevent fingerprints on newly cleaned crystal.

Why does my crystal chandelier produce rainbow patterns on the walls?

This is the defining characteristic of K9 optical crystal — and the primary reason to choose crystal over other materials. Each faceted crystal surface acts as a prism, refracting white LED light and dispersing it into its component colours (the visible light spectrum). The pattern moves and changes as the angle of light shifts throughout the day and as you move around the room. This effect is strongest when the chandelier is the primary or only light source in the room, and with warm white (2700–3000K) light. Cool white produces a crisper, more blue-dominant dispersion; warm white produces the classic amber-gold spectrum most associated with crystal chandeliers.

How heavy are crystal chandeliers?

Weight varies significantly by size and configuration. Compact crystal pendants (3-light, small diameter) typically weigh 5–15 lbs. Mid-size dining room crystal chandeliers are typically 15–40 lbs. Large multi-arm crystal chandeliers and staircase installations can weigh 50–200+ lbs. The weight of every fixture is listed on the product page in the Crystal Collection. Before purchase, confirm your ceiling junction box (or the structural reinforcement it sits in) is rated to exceed the fixture weight. A licensed electrician must assess this before any crystal chandelier installation.

What colour temperature works best with crystal?

Warm white (2700–3000K) produces the classic crystal chandelier effect — the refracted light carries amber and gold tones that emphasise the warmth of the crystal material and frame. This is the most traditional and the most flattering for dining and living spaces. Cool white (5500–6500K) produces a sharper, more contemporary dispersion with more blue and white in the spectrum — effective in modern interiors with silver or chrome frames. Remote-changeable (RC Changeable) variants allow you to switch between warm and cool white via remote — ideal if you're unsure which temperature suits the space better until you see it in context.

Can crystal chandeliers be installed in rooms with low ceilings?

Compact crystal pendants and smaller multi-light configurations can work in rooms at 9 feet and above, provided the drop length is adjusted to maintain 7 feet of clearance from the floor. Large cascade crystal chandeliers like GALA require 15–18 feet of ceiling height minimum for proper proportional drop. For standard 8-foot ceilings, a compact crystal flush-mount or a pendant with a minimal drop is possible, but the full prismatic effect of a cascade or multi-arm crystal fixture requires height to develop. What finishes are available for crystal chandeliers?

Most pieces in the Crystal Collection are available in gold, silver, and black frame finishes. The frame finish significantly changes the overall effect: gold frames with warm white light create the warmest, most traditional crystal effect. Silver/chrome frames with warm white produce a cooler, more contemporary result. Black frames with cool white create a dramatic, high-contrast contemporary look that suits post-modern interiors. Can I install a crystal chandelier myself?

For small, lightweight crystal pendants under 10–15 lbs, an experienced DIYer can manage installation safely — provided the junction box rating is confirmed and all electrical connections are made correctly to code. For any crystal chandelier over 15 lbs, for staircase or double-height applications, or for any chandelier that requires ceiling reinforcement, professional installation by a licensed electrician is mandatory. Crystal components are fragile during installation and difficult to reassemble if damaged. For large staircase installations, scaffolding or specialist access equipment may be required.
